Song Review: RuPaul Declares "I'm A Winner, Baby" as New Album, Netflix Show Debut

   RuPaul is HUSTLIN' in 2020.

Though the most recent iteration of her daytime talk show will not move forward following a three-week test run this past summer, the queen of all queens still has a slate of Drag Race editions expected to premiere this year. They include a celebrity edition, the highly anticipated All Stars 5, and the official twelfth season.

In addition, RuPaul portrays the fierce and fabulous Ruby Red in her just-released Netflix original series AJ and the Queen. To celebrate the release, the “Sissy That Walk” chanteuse shares her thirteenth studio album You’re A Winner, Baby. Featuring eight new recordings, a mix of dance and bounce influence, one particular inclusion stands tall above the rest.

“I’m A Winner, Baby” is the typical inspirational dance/pop tune we’ve come to expect from RuPaul. However, with a production structure eerily similar to that of “What Is Love?” by Haddaway, the entertainer transports listeners back to the 90s technicolor dance floor for a tough lesson in love.

Acknowledging her usual lucky streak, RuPaul sings of losing her balance for a moment when she locks eyes with another. Backed by a child’s taunt turned motivational piece of advice, the artist pats herself on the back for stumbling across the rare romantic find. “I never fell in love, cuz the odds are too high, you lose before you get across the finish line”, she sings on the second verse, though now experiencing a change of heart.

Sprinkled to perfection with hints of ABBA, the ode to taking a chance at love is joyous and encouraging. “I’m A Winner, Baby” might take creative inspiration from the past, but it still sounds prime for 2020 club airplay. Usually, RuPaul exerts confidence and assurance. Here though, there might be some reason for concern, gambling and unsure whether the romance jackpot will hit. Still, she pushes forward. That's what we expect.

Along with "I'm A Winner, Baby", other album highlights off You're A Winner, Baby include the optimistic "Blessed" and catty "Bring Back My Girls".

Now, go stream AJ and the Queen. Can I get an amen?
