In his first steps away from One Direction , ZAYN emerged as a maturing solo artist who would be able to transition from a boy band member to a far-reaching pop singer. And he seemed to be doing his job well.
Both their first single, " Pillowtalk ", and their debut album "Mind Of Mine", both of 2016, topped the US and UK charts. This was a feat that he could never repeat later, even though " I Don't Wanna Live Forever (with Taylor Swift) " also made good on the bestseller lists.
Still, nothing could predict the icy reception given to "Icarus Falls," his second solo work. It may be argued that the album came out at a not very favorable time (December 14, 2018), but that didn't hurt his former colleague Harry Styles - he released his second album pretty much the same day as 2019, but successfully. Another explanation lies in the decision to release a long album, 27 songs, and ambitious or not to go on tour - he has suffered from stage fright since at least 2016.
The fact is that even though it is a very decent album and with several great moments, the work did not find an audience willing to listen to it. "Icarus Falls" went no further than 61st place in the US, and even worse, 77th place in Britain.
For the future lies the cheer that the singer, who is 26, rediscovers the path of balance between artistic ambition and popular success.
