After winning the eighth season of The X Factor Australia, mentored in the "under 22" group by glam rocker Adam Lambert, 17-year-old Isaiah Firebrace released his self-titled debut album and sent his champion single "It's Gotta Be You" to the Top 40 of his country's charts. Now, showcasing his show-stopping, Sam Smith-like vocal talents, Isaiah has been chosen to represent Australia in the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest, unveiling the dramatic "Don't Come Easy" as his song submission. Following in the footsteps of predecessors Guy Sebastian and Dami Im.
"Don't Come Easy", fitting for Eurovision's evident love of theatrics and spectacle, finds the young artist hesitant about casually jumping into a new relationship, still reeling from the pain and heartbreak seemingly caused by a previous lover. Isaiah is the first to admit it's a struggle to win his heart, and though it sounds like he would be willing to give happiness another shot, the fear of loss takes over his thought process. Ultimately, he would rather shelter himself than take a risk.
Carried to great heights by rousing production that continues to build as the song progresses, Isaiah's somber vocal performance highlights his willingness to share with listeners, share in his vulnerability and distress. "No, it don’t come easy, no, it don’t come cheap, been burned too many times to love easily, don’t mistake me, my love runs deeps, but it don’t come easy, it don’t come cheap," the artist belts on the golden chorus, one that the likes of Adele or Sia would have fought to have.
For an artist so young, barely kicking off his sure-to-be lengthy career, Isaiah is able to channel years of sorrow into the resonating lyrics of "Don't Come Easy". That's no simple task. At any moment, it sounds as if the artist is ready to give up completely and throw in the towel, there's a delicate touch to his vocals. However, it is the persistence to continue that gives the new release another layer of emotion, the strength to try again.
Many may not know who Isaiah Firebrace is at the moment, but that can certainly change with his new powerhouse release. "Don't Come Easy" has the potential to find a worldwide audience once heard performed live on the Eurovision stage, and easily find its way into the Top 5 of the entire competition. The vocals are strong and emotive, the songwriting is simple yet hard-hitting and the intensity is intact.
